Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology Clinical Experience
How many clinical hours will I have? is open five days a week during regular business hours.
Where do I receive my clinical education? The clinical education will be divided between the Center for Oral Health Care & Research building, where we have installed the latest CBCT and panoramic X-ray machines and the radiology reading room in the School of Dentistry when we receive, interpret and report hundreds of cases per month sent from all over the world.
What types of procedures will students be expected to perform to complete the rotation? You will be trained in radiation physics, radiation biology, radiographic techniques and diagnostic imaging with conventional and advanced radiographic procedures such as CT, Cone Beam CT and MRI. You will learn to read radiographic images and compose radiology reports.
You will learn to diagnose and compose reports for:
- TMJ
- Implants
- Oral surgery
- Cystic, tumoral and dysplastic lesions of the oral and maxillofacial
You will also receive a foundation in oral medicine, management of systemic diseases and participate in tumor boards.
Who supervises and teaches? All of our faculty members are board certified oral and maxillofacial radiologists, graduating from multiple dental schools in the United States. You will be working with a team of faculty members who are there to guide you and serve as mentors. Instructors hold case conferences with students.
What clinical rotations will I participate in? You will participate in rotations at University Hospital, Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base and in the UT Dentistry’s Center for Oral Health Care & Research. You must enroll in a minimum of three one-month rotations.
Who are my patients? Patients are members of the San Antonio and Bexar County community. You also will read cases referred to our reporting service from across the United States and from some European and Asian countries, as well.
